April Monthly Medal & Brown Cup

Posted on April 24, 2021 | by Peter Henderson

With a pleasantly large entry of seventy one members this competition was held on 24th April, on a bright sunny day but with a surprisingly cold and stiff breeze from the north east. The winner of the medal with a score of 96(34)62 was Liam Ramsay and in second place on a score of 86(21)65 was Robert ‘Tug’ Wilson. Third equal was a quartet (not musical) of Grant Gill on 85(18)67; Colin Robinson on 87(20)67; George Grant on 79(12)67 and Rory Monks on 93(26)67. In seventh equal place was Ian Wilkie on 94(26)68 and Gerald Beggs on 84(16)68. Prizes of £50 for first; £40 for second; £15 each for the players in third equal place and £5 each for the two players in seventh equal place were awarded. Only three players managed to score two’s at the nominated holes, these being Rodney Pow and Peter Henderson at the 7th, with Paul McVie being the only one to do so at the 18th. They received the generous sum of £12 each for their efforts. The entry fee was £3 per player, making a total of £213 from the seventy one entrants; and with £160 being paid out to the winners and £36 to the two’s winners, this left £17 for the contingency fund. We are grateful to the generosity of Les Miller Garage Services who have sponsored this competition for a number of years.

Alex Ponton Memorial Cup

Posted on April 17, 2021 | by Peter Henderson

The above event, sponsored by South East Heating, was played on 17th April as a two man texas Scramble, and although there was a slight delay of ten minutes at the beginning due to frost, when the competition got under way the members enjoyed a lovely sunny day with only a slight breeze. The scoring was generally good, but the winners of the cup with a very good score of 64(4)60 was Les McAllister & Colin Robinson. Second on a score of 63(2)61(bih) was Mark Easson & Iain Clark; third was Alistair McVie & Drew Reid on a score of 66(5)61(2nd bih); and fourth was Jordan Reid & Greg Fenton on a score of 70(9)61. Prizes of £45 each; £35 each; £25 each and £10 each were awarded to the winners. Prizes of £6 were awarded to the teams who managed to score a two at the 6th and 18th holes, and a total of nine teams achieved this feat, with the teams of Falconer/Ramsay; Wheelans/Main doing so at the 6th hole; with the teams of Inglis/Wood; Bell/Legge; Henderson/Rutherford; Mitchell/Grant; Cockburn/MacGregor; Easson/Clark and McAllister/Robinson doing it at the 18th. A total of 29 teams took part in the competition; the entry fee was £10 per team, making a grand total of £290 for distribution. With £230 being paid out to the winners; and £54 to the 2’s winners, this left £6 for the contingency fund.

The Grouse Trophy, 2021

Posted on April 10, 2021 | by Peter Henderson

This event was played on Saturday, 10th April, and once again there was a delay of about one hour at the start due to frosty conditions. When the competition did get under way, the members enjoyed the best of conditions, with long sunny spells and light winds, although some did get caught out with a couple of short lived hail showers in the early afternoon. This was a three man team event, with the two best net scores counting as the team score at each hole. The winners of the Grouse Trophy, with a very good score of 122, was the team of Ian Wilkie; Tom Welsh and Billy Macdonald, and they received a prize of £30 each for their considerable efforts. Second with a score of 123 was the team of Grant Kinghorn; Hughie Macdonald and Ian Main, and they received £25 each. Third was the team of Peter Henderson; Les Rutherford and Andy Pickersgill with a score of 125(bih) and they received £15 each. Prizes for 2’s at the 6th/15th holes were won by Rodney Pow and John Coyle at the 6th; and Jackson Cockburn; Grant Kinghorn; Scott Galloway and Nathan Douglas at the 15th; each of these players receiving the princely sum of £4 for their efforts. There was also a prize for nearest the hole at the 9th/18th (each player having two chances to achieve this feat) and in this case the winner was Dennis Smith who managed to get his ball to stop 2’5″ from the hole. He received a prize of £20 for his efforts and must be congratulated on his magnificent shot from the tee, although it must be recorded as a sad postscript that he failed to convert his score into a two. The entry fee was £15 per team, making a total of £270 from the 18 teams who took part; £210 was paid out to the winners, and with £24 going to the two’s winners and £20 to the nearest the hole winner, this left £16 to the contingency fund.

Stableford Trophy 2021

Posted on April 3, 2021 | by Peter Henderson

The above competition took place on Saturday, 3rd April, and although there was a delay at the start of about one hour due to frosty conditions, a total of 59 members took part in a competition which enjoyed the very best of weather, dry and sunny with a very light breeze. The winner of the Trophy with a total of 43 points was Hughie Macdonald, who was also awarded a prize of £45 for his efforts. Second equal were David Beveridge and Ronnie Douglas on 41 points, who were awarded £30 each; and Fourth was our long suffering Captain John Coyle on 40 points, and he was awarded £20. There were three two’s at the 6th hole, recorded by Paul McVie; Rob Forrest & John Coyle, and there was a further three two’s at the 18th hole, recorded by Grant Lightfoot; Les McAllister & Ian Potts. Each of these skilful players received the sum of £5 for their efforts. The entry fee was £3, making a total of £177 from the 59 entrants; £125 was paid out in prize money and with £30 going to the two’s winners this left £22 for the contingency fund. Our thanks to Four Seasons Contracting Ltd (see above photograph) for sponsoring this event.
