The first of the qualifying rounds for the Club Championships was held on Saturday, 8th May, in what can only be described as challenging conditions, with prolonged and sometimes heavy showers and gusty winds. Though qualifying is on the basis of gross scores, each of the three rounds are played as individual net score competitions. The golfer who mastered the atrocious conditions with a very good score of 73(7)66 was Chris Kemp. In second place was Neil Purves on a score of 95(26)69(bih); third was Gary Purves also on a net score of 86(17)69(2ndbih); and fourth was Harry Borthwick also on a net score of 89(20)69. In fifth place on his own was Gordon MacGregor on a score of 82(12)70. Prizes of £50; £40; £30; £20 and £10 were awarded to these five winners. The nominated two’s holes were the 7th and 18th, and whilst none of the entrants managed this feat at the 7th; five of them managed it at the 18th, these being Ron Robertson; Chris Kemp; Alan Brown; Peter Henderson and Liam Cassidy, each of them receiving the sum of £7 for their efforts. There were 69 members who took part in the competition and the entry fee was £3, making a total of £207 for distribution; of this sum £150 was paid out in prize money and with £35 going to the two’s winners this left £21 for the contingency fund.
