The third and final qualifying round for the Club Championships was held on Saturday, 22nd May, in what can only be described as perfect conditions for playing golf, with prolonged sunny spells and light winds. Though qualifying is on the basis of gross scores, each of the three rounds are played as individual net score competitions. The golfer who excelled on this occasion with a very good score of 73(9)64 was Craig Niven. In second place was Billy Macdonald on a score of 74(9)65(bih); and third was Rory Monks also on a net score of 86(21)65. Fourth was David Beveridge on a net score of 86(20)66(bih); fifth was Graeme Kerr also on a score of 86(20)66(2ndbih); and sixth on the same net score of 72(6)66 was our worthy President Jocky Hume. Prizes of £45; £35; £25; £20; £15 and £10 were awarded to these six winners. The nominated two’s holes were the 6th and 18th, and whilst none of the entrants managed this feat at the 6th; only one player managed it at the 18th, that skilled and lucky competitor being Iain Clark. As £37 was held over from last week’s competition this singular achievement netted the winner a princely sum of £70 for his efforts. There were 69 members who took part in the competition and the entry fee was £3, making a total of £207 for distribution; of this sum £150 was paid out in prize money and with £33 going to the two’s winner this left £24 for the contingency fund.
A big thank you to Ronnie Douglas who sponsors the ‘B’ Championship. Ronnie is an Ex-Captain of the Club who belongs to a relatively small band of people who give generously of their time and efforts in maintaining the golf course, clubhouse and its environs.
