Open Mixed Greensome

Posted on June 27, 2021 | by Peter Henderson

This competition, which is sponsored by Alan McGhee, took place on Sunday, 27th June, in gloriously sunny conditions with only light winds from the north east. The winning team consisted of our esteemed Match Secretary Bruce Bett along with his partner Wendy Boustead who posted a score of 85(22)63. Second was Norman and Carol Purves on 79(13)66; third was Diane Cassidy and George Grant 77(10)67(bih); and fourth was the partnership of Les Rutherford and Jean Beattie on 79(12)67(best last three holes). These winners received prizes of £60; £50; £40 and £20 respectively. The winners of the George Scott decanter for the best gross score was the team of George Grant and Diane who recorded a gross score of 77. The nominated two’s holes were the 6th and 18th, but none of the teams managed to score the required number at any of these holes, and therefore the prize money of £32 has been added to the contingency fund. A total of sixteen teams took part in the competition and the entry fee per team was £14, making a grand total of £224 for distribution; £170 was paid out in prize money and this left £22 for the contingency fund. Due to problems with the computer system we were unfortunately unable to process the scores in such a way that the results were available to view on the selkirk website, although they are available on the app.

Many thanks to Alan McGhee who has sponsored this competition for a long number of years.

These winners received prizes of £45; £35; £25; £15; £10 and £5 respectively. The nominated two’s holes were the 7th and 18th and six players managed to achieve this feat, those being Peter Henderson & Callum Anderson at the 7th, with Mitch Thomson, Ian Main, Jocky Hume & Gerald McMorrow accomplishing it at the 18th; each receiving £4 for their efforts. David Heard did one better and scored a ‘hole in one’ at the 7th hole and doubled his money to £8. In the time honoured fashion he generously provided a bottle of whiskey for the other contestants. The entry fee was £3, making a total of £177 from the 59 players; £135 was paid out in prize money to the winners, and with £32 being paid out to the 2’s winners, this left £10 for the contingency fund.

Our thanks go to Border Safeguard who have continued to sponsor this competition for a number of years.

The Selkirk Rosebowl, which is a two man team event with the best net score at each hole counting for the team, was played on Saturday, 12th June, in perfect weather conditions with long sunny spells and medium to strong winds from the west. The above tournament took place on 1st June in perfect conditions for playing golf with long sunny spells and light winds. This was reflected in the scoring which was generally very good. The team scores consisted of the aggregate best two net scores at each hole, and the winners with a total of 126 were Gerald Beggs; Alan Brown and Robert J. Wilson. Second was the team of David Heard; Ron Robertson and Andrew Reid on 128; and third was the team of Ian Wilkie; David Beveridge and Norman Roxburgh on 129. Prizes of £35 each; £25 each and £15 each were awarded to these winners. Individual prizes for scoring a 2 at the nominated holes were awarded to Les Rutherford; Ron Robertson and Rodney Pow at the 6th hole, and to Ronnie Douglas who was the only player who managed this feat at the 18th; each of these lucky people receiving £10 each for their efforts. Nearest the hole at the 6th/15th was Brian Barnard who won 3 miniatures of gin and 3 golf balls; and nearest the hole at the 9th/18th was Len Gateson who also received 3 miniatures of gin and £10 cash for his efforts. Twelve teams took part in the competition and with the entry fee being £24 per team this amounted to a total of £288; and with £225 being paid out to the winning teams and £40 being paid to the 2’s winners, this left £23 for the contingency fund.

Many thanks go to our President Jocky Hume who, as well as providing the pies and filled rolls for our sustenance, also donated the golf balls and £10 cash as part of the prizes for nearest the hole. Our thanks also go to Grant Kinghorn who donated the miniatures of gin. Last, but by no means least, our thanks also go to Andrew Robertson; Stuart McCall and of course our bar convener Donald Ballantyne, for attending to our needs.
