This event, played on Saturday, 4th September, and sponsored by the Gleghorn Family, consists of a mixed stroke play competition with the trophy being awarded to the lowest net score. The weather was unfortunately overcast with prolonged periods of drizzly rain, although it was reasonably warm with only light winds. The winner of the trophy with an excellent score of 69(7)62 was our worthy President Jocky Hume; second on a very good score of 77(14)63(bih) was Graeme Bell; third on the same net score of 78(15)63 was Bill Walton; and fourth on a score of 81(16)65 was Marjorie Rae. These winners received prizes of £40; £30; £20 and £10 respectively. (It should be noted that the scores entered on the website and app have failed to take the correct handicap from the lady golfers, and their final net score is actually one less than that shown). The nominated two’s holes were the 6th and 18th, and whilst no golfer achieved this feat at the 18th, two of them managed it at the 6th, these being Martine Pow and Colin Robinson, each of them receiving £11 for their efforts. Generously donated by Martine Pow, there was an additional prize of £50 for nearest the hole at the 18th, and the skilful (lucky?) golfer who succeeded in this task was none other than the esteemed Bill Walton. A total of 44 members took part in this competition, and at an entry fee of £3 this meant that £132 was available for distribution. With £100 being paid out in prize money to the winners, and £22 being paid to the 2’s winners, this left £10 for the contingency fund.
Our thanks go to the Cleghorn family for sponsoring this competition, and also to Martine Pow for her sponsorship of the ‘nearest the hole’ event at the 18th hole.
