This competition was played on Monday, 6th September, in overcast but warm weather with only moderate winds. The winners on the day was the team of M. Fairclough (Winterfield); R. Gowdridge (Roxburghe) and F. Millar (Duns) with a score of 65(10)55. Second was the team of H. Middlemiss; G. Lydon and T. Mullin (all from Wearside) with a score of 67(10)57, and third was the home team of Gerald Beggs; Robert J. Wilson and Alan Brown on a score of 69(11)58(bih). These winners received prizes of £90; £60 and £30 respectively. The scratch prize of £30 went to the home team of Peter Henderson; Les Rutherford and Andy Pickersgill with a magnificient score of 64. There were nominated two’s holes at the 6th and 18th but only one team, consisting of H. Middlemiss; G. Lydon and T. Mullin (Wearside) managed to achieve this feat at the 6th hole, with no teams succeeding at the 18th, this team receiving the princely sum of £15 for their efforts. Prizes of three golf balls were awarded for nearest the hole at the 6th/15th (won by R. Huggins, Wearside); nearest the line at the 8th/17th (won by T. Mullin, Wearside) and nearest the hole at the 9th/18th (won by David Beveridge). Only eleven teams entered this competition, with a dissapointing shortage of those from the home club, and one team had to withdraw due to illness of one of their members, so consequently the grand total of only £240 was available for distribution. With £210 being paid out to the winners, and £15 to the two’s winners, this left £15 for the contingency fund.
Our thanks to Jocky and Ethel Hume for providing sustenance for the players in the form of filled rolls and hot pies; and also to Bruce Bett, Jocky Hume and Donald Ballantyne for manning the bar.
