The first round of this competition took place on Saturday, 25th September, in warm but blustery weather conditions. Although this event is played over 36 holes, and the winner of the ‘Shield’ is the golfer with the lowest aggregate net score over the two rounds, each round is played as a seperate contest with prizes for first, second and third net scores and best gross score on each occasion. The winner of the 1st round with a very good score of 92(28)64 was David Reid, second on a score of 70(5)65 was Jim Rae and third on a score of 81(15)66(bih) was Harry Borthwick. These winners received prizes of £35; £25; and £15 respectively. The winner of the scratch prize with a magnificent round of 68 was Paul McVie and he received an award of £20 for his efforts. The nominated two’s holes on this occasion were the 6th and 18th, and whilst no golfer achieved this feat at the 18th hole, two of them managed it at the 6th, those being Gordon Inglis and Les Rutherford, and they received the princely sum of £10 each for their efforts. A total of 40 members took part in the competition and at an entry fee of £3 this amounted to £120 available for distribution. With the victors in receipt of a sum totalling £95, and the two’s winners receiving a total of £20, this left £5 for the contingency fund.
